Karen Dutko

Karen Dutko is a Digital Content Assistant for the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge. She produces written content for social media and the SLAGC blog which promote sustainability breakthroughs and contributions by UCLA researchers and staff. As a former SLAGC Undergraduate Research Scholar during the 2020-21 academic year, Karen helped create a new landscaping plan to incorporate more native plants on campus and help support local pollinator populations.

Outside of SLAGC, Karen is currently part of a research lab led by Elsa Ordway at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in collaboration with the UCLA Congo Basin Institute. Through this project, Karen utilizes remote sensing techniques to map and quantify deforestation in Southern Cameroon as part of UCLA's Undergraduate Research Scholars Program. Beyond her academic work, Karen is the President of Sigma Delta Sigma, UCLA's premier multicultural community-service based sorority.

Karen is a fourth-year Environmental Science major at UCLA with a concentration in Environmental Systems & Society, while also minoring in Geographic Information Systems & Technology. She will complete her bachelor of science in spring of 2023.
