As part of UCLA’s Sustainability Plan, a goal has been set to divert 90% of the university’s waste from landfills. This aligns with the UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge, which aims to transform Los Angeles into the world’s most sustainable megacity by 2050.
In order to facilitate proper waste sorting and waste reduction, UCLA students and employees are encouraged to participate in the Think Outside the Landfill Challenge. This initiative is a collaborative effort between staff and UCLA’s sustainability and facilities management departments and features weekly waste-diversion tasks. Challenges include tasks such as bringing your own bags to the supermarket and switching to rechargeable batteries.
“Bruins, especially students, are more conscious than ever about waste and the negative impact on our planet, as well as public health,” said Kikei Wong, UCLA’s zero waste manager. “Achieving zero waste is a big step and reflects UCLA’s bold commitment to being a leader on environmental causes.”
