Congratulations to Shaily Mahendra (associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering) for receiving the 2018 Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman award from the Government of India Non-Resident Indian Welfare Society. The organization honored Mahendra for her research accomplishments in the field of civil and environmental engineering. Her notable accomplishments include microbial processes in natural and engineered systems, applications of molecular and isotopic tools in environmental microbiology, environmental implications and applications of nanomaterial, and biotransformation of emerging water contaminants.
Applications of Mahendra’s research may help the city of Los Angeles improve its sustainable treatment of drinking water, groundwater, industrial and municipal wastewater, and recycled reclaimed water. In 2016, the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge awarded funding to Mahendra and a team of researchers to develop a coating system that aims to resist biofouling on wastewater treatment filters. This research will help the region produce more energy-efficient local water.
