UCLA State of the Commute report showed all-time low in solo drivers and greenhouse gas emissions

UCLA campus

The State of the Commute report, published by UCLA Transportation, showed how hybrid and remote work arrangements benefitted campus and commuters in 2021.

Last year, even with the return to in-person instruction, only 28% of commuters were solo drivers. This was the lowest-ever rate and helped keep UCLA’s greenhouse gas emissions at historically low levels.

In conjunction with the decrease in single drivers, more UCLA students, staff and faculty became “multimodel commuters” in 2021. Becoming “multimodel” indicated that individuals were combining telework with driving, carpools or bus rides when working on campus was required. With fewer Bruins no longer wanting or needing a full-time parking permit, UCLA began to offer discounted daily parking through the Bruin ePermit system. This enabled commuters to make day-to-day commute decisions, rather than committing financially to permits only needed on occasion.
