Timothy Brewer says destroying animal habitats increases chances for future pandemics

Publication: Press Enterprise

UCLA Expert: Timothy Brewer: Professor of Epidemiology, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and of Medicine; Member, Division of Infectious Diseases, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine

Synopsis: Experts once believed the SARS-CoV-2 virus would be an ongoing threat for years or decades into the future. But they now think the worst of it is over.

UCLA News: As civilization continues to move into environments where only animals, and their diseases, previously dwelled, it’s almost certain other diseases will jump to humans. “We are not alone on this planet and we need to figure out how to share our environment with all species,” Brewer said. “The more that we encroach on others’ habitats, the more likely we are to encounter something we haven’t seen before. Don’t build a bunker in your backyard, but do write to your mayor, your Congressperson, your senator and ask ‘Are we effectively funding our public health surveillance programs and prevention programs?’ That would be a very good thing to do.”
