The UCLA Rothman Family Institute for Food Studies will bring together interdisciplinary scholars and chefs in the pursuit of a healthier population and planet. Founded on robust undergraduate minor and graduate certificate programs, the institute will bolster the UC Office of the President’s Global Food Initiative, which explores how society will feed a growing population that is expected to reach eight billion by 2025.

Already a leader in the growing field of food studies, UCLA will increase understanding of and tackle global challenges — including climate change — by looking at food production, preparation, sharing, consumption and disposal.

The Rothman Family Institute is partnering with the Semel Healthy Campus Initiative Center at UCLA. Dr. Wendelin Slusser, associate vice provost of the Semel Center, helped build the foundation of the institute through her work across campus and in Los Angeles.

“Food can heal. The institute is looking at food from a system-based, interdisciplinary perspective to contribute to the health and well-being of the individual, community and the planet,” said Slusser, expressing her passion and excitement for the project.
