Kyle Cavanaugh and other researchers unveiled new technology to conserve kelp forests

Publication: Bloomberg

UCLA Expert: Kyle Cavanaugh: Associate Professor and Ladder Faculty, Geography; Member, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability

Synopsis: Bloomberg News reported on kelpwatch.org, a new kelp conservation tool co-created by scientists at the Nature Conservancy, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Cavanaugh was part of this collaborative effort.

UCLA News: “There’s been continuous Landsat coverage of the planet since the early ’80s, and that is just incredibly valuable when you’re trying to look at long-term changes in a marine ecosystem that changes really rapidly,” said Cavanaugh, who helped develop techniques to extract images of kelp from satellite data. “That will help identify where kelp might be especially threatened by climate change or other stressors, as well as identifying areas that are more resilient to climate shocks.”
