Yoram Cohen says new hydropanel technology might not be cost effective

Publication: ABC News

UCLA Expert: Yoram Cohen: Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; Professor, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability

Synopsis: Hydropanels are used in California to bring clean water to the most remote deserts. The technology has many benefits, but with those benefits comes a major cost. The panels, which last about 20 years, cost $4,000 upfront.

UCLA News:  Cohen told ABC News that the cost of these panels may not be sustainable. He noted that the average person needs about 2 liters of water a day, but the hydropanels currently produce 3 to 5 liters for one household. "If you are in an area where you have no water whatsoever… the question is why?” he asked. Why would you want to actually develop residential [properties]?"
