UCLA faculty voice: Are we leaving nature behind?

The extinction crisis is vast, complicated, and difficult to understand from figures and photographs alone, observes Peter Kareiva, director of UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. For children especially, the concept of extinction remains largely abstract, even when it is discussed in schools. According to Kareiva, we can best improve our grasp on the reality of this crisis by fostering closer relationships with nature in urban settings.
