James Bowie, a UCLA professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and his research team have synthesized complex enzyme systems outside of cells that function well enough to be useful for the production of biofuels and commodity chemicals. According to Bowie, these enzymes will be capable of converting sugar into fuel with much higher efficiency than traditional methods.
