Heat waves becoming more prominent in urban areas, research reveals

Prolonged periods of extreme heat increased significantly between 1973 and 2012 in almost half of the urban areas the researchers analyzed.

Dennis Lettenmaier (department of Geography) co-authored a study suggesting that the frequency of heat waves has increased dramatically over the past 40 years. The trend appears to be growing faster in urban areas than in less-popuated areas around the world.
