Gregory Pierce discusses a series of alternative strategies to relieve droughts in the U.S.

Publication: The NY Times

UCLA Expert: Gregory Pierce: Assistant Adjunct Professor, Department of Urban Planning; Co-Director, UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation; Senior Researcher, Water and Transportation Initiatives; Member, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability

Synopsis: A cross-country pipeline was proposed in an NY Times article discussing drought solutions. Pierce suggested alternatives including water conservation, water recycling, and desalination.

UCLA News: Pierce commented on other approaches the United States can take on tackling this issue. “For the United States, it would be easier to just build a series of desalination plants along the West Coast … And before turning to desalination, which is itself energy-intensive and thus expensive, communities in the West should work harder at other steps, such as water conservation and recycling.”
