Greg Pierce and Madelyn Glickfeld recommend stronger water restrictions for LADWP

Publication: L.A. Times

UCLA Expert: Greg Pierce: Adjunct Assistant Professor in Urban Planning, Lusking School of Public Affairs; Co-Director, Luskin Center for Innovation; Co-Director, UCLA Water Resources Group; Member, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability; Senior Researcher, Water and Transportation Initiatives.

Madelyn Glickfeld: Co-Director, UCLA Water Resources Group.

Synopsis: Pierce and Glickfeld discussed new watering restrictions that L.A. Department of Water and Power (LADWP) customers are facing. While the current plan would help conserve vital supplies, some water experts believed an even stronger response was warranted.

UCLA News: “It’s a fine way to go for now, but I would recommend not hesitating to go to one-day [watering] and seeing those plants die, if necessary,” said Pierce. Glickfeld noted that the LADWP should be “doing more to make permanent cuts in water use,” and suggested tax write-offs for the cost of replacing sprinklers with drip irrigation as one possibility.
