Daniel Swain warns of deadly drought and fires as a result of climate change

Publication: CNN, NY Times

UCLA Expert: Daniel Swain: Assistant Researcher, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability

Synopsis: Swain speaks on changing patterns in fire activity in an article by CNN. Additionally, swain highlights the dangers of extreme climate combinations in a publication by the NY Times.

UCLA News:

CNN: “The transition period between winter and spring is usually when the Plains states tend to experience their wildfire season. But there have been some unusual trends in recent fire activity there … Even if there is still a relative lull in the winter, it’s not as deep a lull as used to be. Scientists are seeing periods in the winter which used to have virtually zero fire risk, in some places now having appreciable fire risk, in some cases.”

NY Times: “Even by midcentury, some places are seeing a doubling or tripling. That’s not that far in the future, and that’s not that much more additional warming than we’ve already seen.”
