UCLA Expert: Daniel Swain: Climate Scientist, UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability
Synopsis: In a new “Greater L.A.” segment and article, KCRW reports on cloud seeding. This technology interests Southern Californian water agencies due to its potential to increase water outputs during storms and therefore combat drought.
UCLA News: While the technology is exciting, Daniel Swain feels that engineering the weather — such as through cloud seeding — is not a promising endeavor. “There’s a long history of people making really bold claims about being able to manipulate the weather, and time and time again, science really has failed to demonstrate that these attempts to do that have actually yielded any fruit.”
