UCLA Expert: Daniel Swain: Assistant Researcher and Climate Specialist, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability
Synopsis: A “megaflood” could be California’s next “big one.” Swain is using his research to prepare the state for the potential of this disaster.
UCLA News: Swain co-developed two megastorm scenarios, ARkHist — based on historical climate, and ARkFuture — which shows what the “plausible worst-case scenario extreme storm sequences might look like in the future. In all honesty…. this will be a disruptive, damaging and destructive event no matter what, but there is still a lot we can do,” Swain said. His paper highlights that “runoff in the future extreme storm scenario is 200 to 400% greater than historical values in the Sierra Nevada.
